Case in point: About six months ago, two uploads on the inner workings of Dr. ![]() While he’s been uploading videos since 2018, it’s his recent shoe reviews that have taken him viral. Kay seems to have appeared out of nowhere. And while there are literally countless content creators who focus on dissecting the look, feel and construction of popular shoes, I’ve never quite seen anyone do it so literally as Weston Kay, the soft-spoken man who runs the leather goods shop Rose Anvil and a YouTube channel of the same name. Instead, I’ve turned to watching YouTube videos of the shoes I want, in the hopes that endless research can be an effective salve for cravings. ![]() But for me, shelling out for shoes with nowhere to actually flex them still feels a little obscene. Stress-shopping is absolutely a form of self-care as we face the wrath of COVID-19. But the reality of being stuck inside so much of the time makes the prospect of dropping several hundred dollars on a pair of kicks less… well, justifiable. I always have an idea of what pair I need (okay, mostly want ) next right now, it’s a mid-cut boot and a pair of sneakers. All kinds, to wear to all sorts of occasions, most of which no longer exist in the context of California’s quarantine - parties, bars, clubs, tailgates, to say nothing of the office and the beach. Nikes look fineA premium boot or premium men’s Oxford is another story: using a beautiful piece of leather that develops a patina over time and that ages well is part of the elegance of those itemsThey are premium because of the time and skill involved it’s not even about the leather, it’s about the techniqueI’m still learning about leather and those among you might have agreements or disagreements based on what she said, please discuss in the comments.Certainly, the second of her statements are more subjective and of course everyone has biases, but I think the first part gives a much fairer and balanced look at the CPs than Rose Anvil’s initial video suggested.Thank you.I’ve been daydreaming about shoes lately. John Lobb or Edward Green that cost >$4000), not a $400 sneakerIn addition, she goes on to state:The whole category of luxury sneakers is a joke and nobody needs oneMaking it luxury adds no value to anyone. Rose Anvil is delusional to think a piece of leather should be used. If it was subpar, you could see itVegetable tanned leather is thick and hard, and not suitable for sports stylesSalpa (the compressed leather counter) is standard. I went to high school in the same small country as her so I’ve followed her for quite some time despite her shoes being quite beyond my budget for fashion (some of them are really pretty too).I sent her the video and she graciously lent her thoughts:Chrome and vegetable tanning has nothing to do with being ‘cheap’ or ‘expensive’Cheap/expensive has everything to do with 1) original condition of the hide, and 2) the quality of the finishingFor example, an aniline vegetable tan (transparent color- as in you can see the leather condition under the color) is expensive not because of the tanning process but because of the quality of the hide. She’s an Italian-based female shoe-wear designer who is very active on Instagram. Knowing next to nothing about leather, and the claims in the video, I wanted to find out more.I thought a reasonable person to ask would be Liudmila. I actually purchased the Achilles Low for my brother two Christmases ago, so the video stuck with me (nobody likes the feeling of being hoodwinked).
